- Long ago the houses were thatched, they had roofs of straw or scraws, these were sods cut in the field ort bog. Sometimes they had a roof of rushes. The windows were very small with four panes of glass and sometimes only two panes. The floors were made of mud. The chimney was made of wattles and plastered with clay. Sometimes a hole in the roof did for a chimney. These little huts had only one room and a kitchen.
