    It was only the potatoe crop failed, and cattle, sheep, and pigs were plentiful, and the corn waved in abundance in the corn-fields.
    People used to exchange these things for Indian meal which they used to make into porridge, and some times they used to walk twenty miles to buy a stone of meal.
    All kinds of fowl disappeared, they either died of starvation, or were killed and eaten.
