- (continued from previous page)This monastery flourished for about 200 years , and the famous "Book of Kells" was kept there. Once it was stolen but was discovered hidden in a wall, with the golden cover torn off.
In the fly-half of this book is written a charter telling the grants made to the Abbey by Irish kings and others. There was a disart attached to the Abbey where pilgrims got food and lodging and spiritual care. In the reign of Henry VIII the abbey was suppressed and the grants confiscated.- Collector
