- In Kilmainham, a town-land lying about one mile south-east of Kells there is a spur of an old monastery. This is the ruins of the monastery of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem established by the de Lacys in 1211.
These Knights were a half-religious, half military order. Their work was to protect pilgrims and travellers.
The people near the ruins of this monastery say that long ago, there was a tradition that every evening at 7 o'clock a bell was heard to ring in the ruins, and that any people heard it.- Collector
