- There was a hedge schools in Drumcree. The master's name was Master Abbot. He was a stranger. He stayed about a year in the district. The pupils used to pay him a penny a day. He stayed in a farmer's house at night. He had a blackboard and chalk. The writing was done sometimes with a pencil and slate.There were First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth classes. The subjects he taught were Reading, Writing, Sums, Grammar and Spelling. There was no Irish language spoken by the master or pupils.
