- In the old schools of Ballyoven English. reading and writing simple Arithmetic, Cathecisim and prayers were taught. The writing was done with a quill pen. The school floor was made of flags. The master was self-educated. There were no seats in the school, and the children sat on blockes. The pupils were in Standard III before they were taught to write.Mary Ellen Keegan.
