    whom he was reared never wore anything else.
    On some farms there are what are called flax-dams. There is one on our farm and one on a neighbouring farm. These are pools of water in which the flax was steeped after being pulled. It was left there for some weeks and then it was taken out and left to dry. The flax was then beaten with flat pieces of sticks until all the seed was taken from it. This was called "scutching" the flax. Then it was spun into linen thread with a spinning wheel and the thred was given to a weaver to be woven into linen. There were two or three weavers round the district that time. When the linen came back from the weaver it was usually very black and dirty but the old women had a special way for bleaching and
