- There was no candles made locally long ago except the rush-candles. The people used make them for themselves. They would get five or six bits of rushes and grease them, and stick them in a candle stick. Basket making consisted of making crandies, skibs and cleves. They were made of sally rods. Patrick Mcalynn's father of Ardnacraney used to make baskets.
Thatching is still carried on in this district. The people nowadays thatch with reeds wheaten straw and oaten straw. Anyone that has lime stones on their land burns them for their own use. There was never any soap making carried on in this district. The local blacksmiths made gates, parts for ploughs, fir-cranes for anyone who ordered them, but did not turn them out for sale.
