- (continued from previous page)The farmer prepares the ground for sowing potatoes. First he digs out the soil with a spade or plough. Then he manures the soil.
The potatoes are sown in drills or in ridges. The plough is used in making both ridges and drills.
Wooden ploughs were made in 1603. They were made by a man named Mr Share that is how the wooden plough got its name ploughshare. There are a few of those ploughs left.
The spades are bought in shops. The names of the spades that were out long ago are called Taibhe [?].
Starch was made out of potatoes for starching clothes.
The farmers children used to pick the potatoes and put then in pits.
The best growing potatoes in this district are kerrpinks and black champions. The best land for growing potatoes is fresh lea land(continues on next page)- Collector
