by the dash. It is given a rolling motion from side to side in our churn. When the butter is made it sticks to the glass on the lid. Warm water is poured on the milk while the churning is in progress to hurry it up. The butter is taken from the churn with two butter spades that are made for the purpose.
It is supposed to be lucky to put drop of milk on the cows back when you are finished milking. Butter milk is given to pigs and sucking calves. It is believed that someone went to a graveyard and cut a hand from someone's body and whoever it is has the hand instead of their own left hand and if that person comes into the house while you are churning they are supposed to bring the butter with them and an other old saying is that if a man goes into the house to light his pipe while you are churning he is supposed to bring the butter in his pipe.
