It is then evident, that his guardian angel played the trick to force him to stay in his own home, in order that he might be able to attend to his lawful duties and to take care of his health.
I find that I must draw the same conclusion from every apparition story that I have heard. - Since the time of the above story I passed the Ghost Hole not less than fifty times late at night; and I noticed that whenever I stopped there to listen I almost always heard something strange; but whenever I went on, about my business, I heard or saw nothing.
I remember distinctly stopping on two occasions to look and listen; and on one of those occasions I heard the prancing of a horse as if he were fighting with another one in the corner of the field at the above-mentioned famous spot.
