- 52A Story of '981. Every Country in the world and especially Ireland has its Heroes many of them have expressive monuments erected to their memories; many more are enclosed in the hearts and minds of the people but many more are forgotten or unknown. To this latter category belongs Hugh Keegan a Wexford Hero of '98. Humble in life and low in the ranks of the insurgents, Hugh Keegan's deeds were passed by Historians of the period and now that the older generation have passed away even his name is forgotten.
Hugh, a small farmer and stone mason, was born in Askaheugh near Clonegal on the borders of Co. Carlow in the year 1772. His father owning the whole townland of that name which contained only nine acres. Hugh was a quite unassuming young man of powerful build and a noted athlete. At the outbreak of the Insurrection he took no part but stayed at home following his trade his brother having joined the rebels. Hugh was taken by the local yeomen under its notorious Captain De Rengy and pitchcapped. This decided Hugh and(continues on next page)- Collector
