    Matty went in, and Tommy stayed outside. As Matty entered where the fairy-man was sitting the fairy-man said, "oh, Matty Evoy from the three Raheens, what way is Catherine Reddy." "I don't know," says Matty, "she is gone off these days, and I came to you to ask you if you could tell me where she is.
    So the fairyman told him to go to a certain field in Raheen at 12.00 o'clock in the night, and at a gap in the ditch stick a white-handled knife at one side of the gap and a white-handled fork at the other side and wait for a short time and Catherine would come along seated behind a man riding a white horse. The fairy-man told Matty to seize her at the moment when the horse was going through the gap. But if he opened his mouth until he was one mile outside Waterford on his way home, she would not come at all.
    Matty started off, but when he went out on the road there was Tommy waiting for the news and Matty could not speak or he would break his promise. Tommy thought Matty was struck dumb until they
