  1. Long ago lime could not be bought as we buy it now so lime kilns were necessary.
On nearly every farm in County Wexford the ruins of old lime kilns are still visible. The were used to burn lime in.
The coal that was used was called culm and was to be got in Castlecomer.
This culm was brought to Ballyanne and the farmers went with their horses and cars for it.
The lime was got in Waterford and Tipperary. It was also brought to Ballyanne and the farmers also went for this.
In order to burn lime a large quantity of bushes or bags of wood was needed.
On the top of this was put a row of culm and then a row of limestone on that
Then a row of Culm and then a row of limestone and so on unti the Kiln was loaded.
