- In famine times people ran so short of potatoes that they came to the mill to buy meal.
They were so hungry that they could not wait to get home so they went down Stirabout Lane and lit fires to cook the meal.
That is how that lane got its name.
On your right as you go down the lane there is a row of house but during the famine there was a row on the left. When Cox bought Clara House he pulled the houses down so as to build the wall hight to keep people from looking into the estate.
Some disease came on the potatoes and they rotted away.
The people had meal which they got from the mill instead of potatoes.
There were a lot of people in the distrct in the time of the famine.
A lot of people went to America in the time of the famine.
Ever since the famine the leave of the potato stalks turn brown.- Collector
