- About eighty years ago, there was a school in a barn near Castletown,Arklow.Grown-ups attended the school. They sat on planks. Slates were used for writing purposes and bits of stone served as pencils. Three books were in use, a Reading, a Spelling and an Arithmetic. Irish was not taught.
The master's name was Culbert. He was from Castletown and had a wee house for himself. Wheaten bread was his staple diet and it was supplied by the people.
When children in the district were unable to attend school, the master went to their homes and taught them.
There is now no trace of the barn.- Informant
