- The extent of my father's farm is eighteen acres. There are about two acres under potatoes. My father nearly always prepares the ground but if he is sick he pays another man to do it. The ground is not manured before being ploughed. The potatoes are sown in drills. First the ground is ploughed and then it is harrowed. Then the drills are opened with a drill plough. Manure is then drawn with a horse and cart from the byre and stable and pig-house. It is thrown in piles in the drills and then it is spread with a grape. My mother cuts the potatoes into seed and they are dropped in the drill about one foot apart. Sulphate of ammonia and superphospate are bought and mixed together and shaken on the potatoes.
