- A great runner of this district was a man named James Timmins or Jim. Tummin as the old people called him. He was a son of Gregory Timmins. He was a noted runner twenty years ago. He won many mile races at sports all over Ireland. His most notable performance was when he won one of the Marathon races promoted by the evening herald. This race started at Navan and finished in Jones's road now Croke Park Dublin.
He went to England and joined the Irish Guards during the great war. He died in England early this year.A noted dancer.
A noted dancer who lived only a few miles from here was the late James Tormey of Ballaghena Virginia. He was perhaps the greatest step-dancer ever Ireland produced. For years he was the champion horn-pipe and reel dancer and beat all corners at the Rotunda Dublin where the championships were then held.A noted Athlete.
Another noted athlete was J. P. Mc Cabe of Cross, Virginia who held the mile flat championship of Ireland for years and who now resides in Blackrock Dublin.A noted walker.
The greatest walker perhaps in around this country was P. K. Blake who still lives in Navan. He was a well-known performer at sports meetings in Ireland long ago.- Bailitheoir
