Now there was a Miss McCabe in the parish, she'd be about forty or tuchin' up to it; she was black an' yalla as ugly as "mortal sin"- you wud'nt meet the lek iv her in a days travel au'iv coorse there wasn't a bhoy in the ring of Ireland that'd luk at her. Shure Father John knew that but he wuz jolly an' leked to be takin' a "hand" at people; so whenever he used to meet Miss Mc Cabe he'd ax "Any sign o' you givin' us a big day, Miss McCabe?" An' shure Miss Mc wuz gettin' tired iv being axed thim kind iv questions.
Well wan day whin Father John wuz out walkin' who did he come across but Miss Mc. He riz his hat to her an' sez he " Gud Mornin' Miss McCabe whin may I ixpect to be earnin' that five pounds or whin are ye goin' to giv us the "big day" (manin' the wedding day iv coorse)?
Now, shure "that wan" knew it wuz only takin' a "rise" out iv her he wuz an' sez she "Indade, Father John, I am unable to(continues on next page)
