    times but in Virginia they usually go to fairs and sell goods. Some of them tell fortunes, some old people believe them.
    In olden times travelling folk used to go to houses and stay for the night, they were allowed, sleep on straw in front of the fire and they were given food in the houses.
    Long ago orphans were known as "poor scholars" and when they went to school the schoolmaster would send the boy home for one or more nights with different scholars and they would have to keep and feed them.
