- It is very unlucky to meet a magpie on the road on a Tuesday morning. It is said that he will meet with an accident before night or that some friend of his will happen with one. There was a certain man out of this town going to a fair on a Tuesday morning. He met a magpie on the road and he turned back with his cattle and wouldn't go to the fair with them. He never went to the fair that day. I know a man who was going on a journey on a Tuesday morning. He met a magpie on the road. He (was) thought he was a great fellow. He landed in the place all right. When he was halfway home it began to thunder and lightning. One great flash of lightning killed him. When a person was going by in a motor car they found him lying on the road and he all black. That was the bad luck that man had on that day. If it rains on St. Swithen's day it will rain for forty days and forty nights.
