Ah, ruthless, keen ailment, you falsely seize me
Old, premature age o'er my feathers you throw,
You left me no pleasures to sooth or to please me
The woods and the vales you concealed from my view.

You came unperceived without notice or warning
I little expected you would call so soon,
You darkened the radiance of life's pleasing morning
And brought evening on when I thought 'twas but noon.
III
The lark mounts on wing when the morning is breaking
And hails with delight the perfulgence of day;
The rose met with dew in the soft breeze of shaking,
And the face of Dame Nature seems gladsome and gay.
IV
Not for me the fields and the meadows are blooming
Not for me these beauties enamel the plain;
Ah, me, this cruel ailment my parts "are" consuming
