    was anyone in the room. He then tried to read but it was useless for every now and then he would have to look across the paper towards the door to see if there was anyone coming in. He lay there until dawn, thinking and wondering what caused the noise, or was it the ghost which was supposed to be there. At last he thought of a stone wall behind which perhaps had fallen, so when daylight came he got up to see if the wall was down but it was still standing.
    All during the day he was dreading the coming of night and wondering if he could get anyone to sleep with him that night. Some time in the evening he was sent to the storeroom for something but when he reached the door he could not get in. After some pushing he got in, but what a sight met his eyes. The whole place was covered with white-wash which had fallen from the ceiling. John now fully understood
