  1. Long ago there was a hedge school, in the townland of Annagh, Ardcarne, Co Roscommon. It was held in an old barn beside Michael Kearnse's . It was called Rose's old school, because the barn belonged to a woman named Rose.
    The teacher who taught in it was a man from the localaty. His name was John Cryan, and at night he went home to his own house. The only salary he got was a penny a week from each pupil.
