  2. The dwelling houses of long ago were built of mud or straw. There was an opening left in the middle of the roof for the chimney. Slates were not heard of at that time. The walls were very high and formed of long poles were standing near each other. The spaces were between the poles were closed in with wickerwork made of twigs and rushes. The people collected the twigs and rushes in baskets. Then the walls were plastered and white-washed.
    The houses had only one apartment.
