  1. One of the biggest local events in Arva in recent years was the visit of President De Velera in April 1934. He has been invited some time previously and weeks before he was expected, preparations began. The town was gaily decorated. Bunting and flags hung from every house. The green white and gold could be seen everywhere.
    At last the great day came, and although cold, it dawned clear and bright. Never before was there such excitement in this little village.
    Soon after first Mass contingents began to arrive from all parts of Ireland. Busses came from Belfast and several other northern towns. The president was to arrive at two o'clock, but long before that time thousands had
