into rolls or prints. In olden times the people put a roundberry gad round the churn. This was supposed to prevent the butter from being taken away. there was also a tradition that if a person went to a well for water, on a May morning before the sun would rise, that she would take her neighbour's butter home with her. If a person came in to a house with a four-leaf shamrock, it was supposed to change the appearance of the butter. Usually the people sprinkled the churn with salt before the work commenced. The people believed that this would bring on all the butter. They also put a coal of fire under the churn, as it was also supposed to protect the butter from being taken away. The buttermilk was used for different household things.
