Prison Labour on Dalkey Hill
At the time when they were building Dun-Laoghaire harbour there were not enough men in Dalkey to work in Dalkey Hill quarry so the government had to employ about two hundred prisoners to work in the quarry breaking stones. The prisoners were hired from all prisons in Ireland. The prisoners used to work for five-shillings a week. The prisoners were not sent back to prison but they were told to clear out of Ireland but only about half went. The other half stayed in Dalkey and their Descendants are still here. P. Quinn 1st
