  2. Early marriages in the case of men were, in the Broomfield district rather rare, at least down to within recent years. The average age for men lay between 40 and 50.
    Reasons:-
    Emigration for half a century was a heavy drain on the population of the district. Families were large, commonly reaching nine or ten. They emigrated in strict rotation
