There was a poor man, who had thirteen sons. He had no food to give them, and he planned to leave them away in a wood. One of the sons name was Jack, and when he heard what his father was about to do he filed his pockets with pebbles.
The father took them to a large wood, and when they were in the middle of the wood he left them. Jack had dropped a pebble here and there, so he knew the way back.
The father then took them to a wood farther away. When they were leaving the house he gave each of them a piece of bread. Jack did not eat his, but dropped a crumb here and there. When they were in the middle of the wood the father left them.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
