- About four acres of potatoes are sown on our farm every year. The quantity of potatoes taken off the field every year depends on the class of seed that is sown. Some seed yields more than others.
The potatoes are sown in drills. The ground is first ploughed, afterwards harrowed, then cultivated.
Then the drills are opened with a drill plough. The manure is then scattered into the drills with a grape. The potatoes are cut carefully in order not to break the buds. Then they are laid on top of the manure about 12 to 14 inches apart.
Then the drills are closed with a plough and the potatoes are covered with the soil.
Then when the potatoes appear above the drills more clay is put up to them with a plough to strengthen the tops. This is very essential in producing a good crop.
