- In olden times there were only a few shops common. If a man or woman got goods in a shop then they would work with the shop man till they would earn the price of the goods they got. In olden times they called the shilling the Bob, they called the sixpence the tanner, they called the florin the two shilling bit. There was hardly any tea or sugar in olden times the much amount sugar or tea you would get that time was about one oz of tea and a half a lb of sugar one oz of tea that time was one penny, and half a lb or sugar was two pence. My granny was telling me one day in her father’s [?] time he was hired with a shop man called James MrCormack and every night he always got two lb of oatmeal. The price of it was sixpence and that was his pay everyday. They used to eat nothing but oatmeal bread.
