They faded into the clearer blue
    Of the atmosphere around,
And died with a faintly pallid hue
On the slope of the rising ground
    4. Fancy on fields like this might paint
    The pictures of happier days,
Where sorrow’s blackening clouds grow faint
In the glare of the golden rays.
Thus thoughts of his youth to the minstrel came
Which he pondered long with joy,
For they made him feel for a time, the same
Old yearning he felt as a boy.
    5. When he listened to tales of a fairyland
    That was shrouded in mystery
Of wonders wrought by a fairy’s wand
Or a branch of the gentle tree.
With his memory full of the past, he sat
On the slope of fairy knowes
That rise from the smooth, green grassy flat
Where the sheep and cattle browse.
    6. Till the stars came peeping out into the night
For the sun had long since fled –
And the landscape touched by their pale grey light.
Had yielded its gold and red
And the night brought with it a solemn hush,
    Unbroken save by the sound
Of the light breeze chaffing the gentle bush
    That grew about the mound

    7. Hark! Tis fairy music stealing,
Through the stillness of the night!
    Hear the fairy joybells pealing
    See the fairy armour bright.
    8. Round and round in mazy numbers,
See them dance and hear them sing!
All the earth around them slumbers,
Hark ye, how their joybells ring!
    9. Oh, to be a happy fairy!
Oh, to be the fairy king!
    Hear their twinkling footsteps merry,
Hark ye, how their joybells ring!

    10. Sudden the perfumed air around
Was filled with a strange commotion
And the ministrel heard him a weird sound
Like the moan of the distant ocean
