- Long ago people took only three meals in the day, breakfast, dinner and supper. When they got up in the morning they took potatoes, buttermilk and salt for their breakfast. Then in the middle of the day they took potatoes, buttermilk and salt for their dinner but sometimes they took potatoes and thin porridge using the porridge as soup. At about six o'clock they took porridge for their supper. Sometimes they took hard oat bread and a bowl of milk in the evening but they did not always take it.
Long ago they made boxty bread, oat bread and potato cake or fadge. The way they made oat bread was this. First of all they got oat meal and put it in a basin and then mixed it with boiling water and some salt.
