- The ruins of Sir Frederick Hamilton's castle are still to be seen at the north end of the town of Manorhamilton. The castle was burned by Murtagh Mac Sharry in the year 1641.
Sir Frederick was a bad man. He killed many Catholics. At the time two fairly rich old men were living in Ballagmeehan. Sir Frederick heard of them and one night he and a few horsemen went out to Ballagmeehan. It was a snowy night and the two men happened to be churning and they heard Sir Frederick coming. They quenched the fire and threw the milk they were churning on their clothes and ran out behind the house. The night was dark and the horsemen tied their horses and came up to the house.
