“No more the pink and luscious brandling worm Upon an angler's hook may be impaled...”
A boy was prosecuted under the Cruelty to Animals Act for using live bait when angling for pike - hence the following.
No more the pink and luscious brandling worm
Upon an angler's hook may be impaled;
No more before the festive trout he'll squirm,
Or you, my angling friend, will soon be gaoled -
The Irish Free State laws are very strict,
No more with live bait may our fish be tricked.
No more I'll seek in moist and marshy bog
A bait to tempt a large and greedy pike;
And grab with glee a green and gawdy frog -
Knowing it's just the dainty dish he'll like,
For if I do, some noxious Civic Guard
Will drag me up for trial and six months' hard
In Mayfly season - anglers, mayhap
Betake themselves to river or to lake,
To tempt the rising trout with dainty dap -
The fly " aut naturel " they love to take.
But now " tis ruled in our humane Free State,
A cruel crime it is to use live bait.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
