- The local fairs.
The fairs are generally held in towns. When cattle are dear the buyers go around to the farmers' houses or to the crossroads and buy them. Fair greens are kept for the purpose of selling cattle. In Ballinamore the fairs are held on the street. The toll is paid to Henry Nicholl, sixpence each for cattle and - threepence each for pigs. There is luck money given at fairs. It is called "a luck penny", and it is from sixpence to two shillings a head. The seller asks a certain price and the buyer bids a pound or two less, and a third person comes along and divides the difference. Some buyers mark them with a blue or red saddle, and others mark them with mud. There are three great fairs held here namely(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
