  1. In the month of November 1921 troops of Free State soldiers traversed the country in search of the Republican parties who were out for complete separation from England. Both parties differed in their aims and this led to a civil war.
    The Free State troops visited every little town and village in the Saor-Stát. They gathered together the men and boys of this county in Ballyheigue Castle with the object of capturing the Republican leaders, who were on the run and were hiding here and there through the country.
    It so happened that an ambush took place in Tiershanahan not far from Ballingarry this November night,
