The smith uses a hammer, a sledge, a pincers, a rasp, a knife, a file, a drill, a vice, a rule, and a set, when working.
The smith shoes horses, donkeys, and in times gone by they shod cattle to walk to fairs. In those days there were no raods or rail-roads.
The smith makes some farm implements also such as, turf-spades, ploughs, and harrows. To make these things they put the iron in the fire until it was red hot then it was taken up and hammered into what ever shape the wanted it. The smith did some of his work out in the open air such as making tyres. This was done near a stream.
In recent years people believed there was a charm in the anvil.
