- Thatching
Sometime ago my father said that the house needed thatching. He got some rods and he made scallops. He got some straw and he thatched it. My father does not thatch the house himself. He usually employs a man. William Dolphin is said to be the best thatcher in this district. My father gets the house thatched every Spring. Sometimes my father puts boiling water on the rods that he uses for thatching to soften them. It takes about three days to thatch our house. He gets a ladder and he places it against the house. If there is a fall on the street he places a stone at the end of the ladder. Mr Dolphin goes up the ladder and he pulls down some of the old thatch. He got a grape and he stuck it in the roof. My father has to keep the thatcher attended with straw and scallops. Mr Dolphin starts working about ten o'clock in the morning and he stops working at seven in the evening. He puts up about six streaks in the day. My father has to give Mr Dolphin two pints of porter every day or he would not work well. When(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
