further attention till they are ready for digging. This cannot be done till the stalks wither usually at the end of September or beginning or October. All the farmers in this district use a potato digger. Sometimes they join - that is all the farmers in the district dig at one house today, at another tomorrow and so on till all the potatoes are out.
The ends are dug off the drills with shades and if the weather be fine the digger is a very speedy way of getting the potatoes out. It digs one drill at time and throws the potatoes out a good distance. The gatherers work in pairs and the potatoes are thrown into baskets or boxes and put in heaps through the field. These are covered with rushes and a little clay each night. When the digging is finished the pits are covered with a thick coat of rushes and about a foot of clay. Some are drawn into the potato-house for immediate use. The rest remain in the pits till they are sold or are required for seed or use.
