- Shops were very scarce in olden times. There was only one tobacco shop in Hillarney about ninety years ago. People had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling was not carried on after mass, but on rare occasions. At present, buying and selling is carried on rarely, after mass. Should they be not sold there they would be brought to Castleisland the following day.
