Several of them may be seen in Coppena and Raheendenore, and also several settle-beds. There is one at any rate in Edward Lanigan's Raheendenore. In olden times turf was very much used as firing wood, furze bushes, and withered ferns were also often used as firing. Sweeping brushes were made from heather and were called "Brooms". Ferns were and still are used very much in baking bread. They are placed on the lid of the bake-pan and they keep it red until the cake is baked. Tallow candles and a small flat tin little lamp was placed on the hobstone to give light in olden times. This lamp had no globe of any knid. It was very dirty and unhealthy, as it always smoked. Old houses were very badly ventilated and old people seemed to have a dread of fresh air. If anyone in the house were sick, the windows were not only shut, but they were also
