    Tadhg Ciaruigheach and a woman, a neighbout of his, each gave an order to Mick Báid in Dunmanway for a pair of shoes...

    Tadhg Ciaruigheach and a woman, a neighbour of his, each gave an order to Mick Báid in Dunmanway for a pair of shoes.
    They had an argument as to which of them would have the shoes first. The end of it was that Tadg betted a half pint of whiskey that he would have his shoes before she would have hers.
    He went off and wrote a song and sent it to the shoemaker to Mick Báid asking him to send him his shoes as fast as he could, and explaining why he wanted them. Here is some of it -
    "Do gheall cailín óg dhom a's a hainm ní neosainn
    Mar do chuir sí mar chómhairle é iganfhios
    Go mbeadh sí thiar ar sráid rómham istoidhche Dé Máirt
    Ag dorus tighe a tábhaire 'sí ag faire.
    [?] chaillfinn ant offer bhféidir an lá san
    A's ní thiocfadh go brach an fhaid mhairfead
    ??????
    Cuir greim innte ist oidhche le solus na coinnle
    Níos túisce nó mar scaoilfinn í abhaile
    ??
    Iarrfad-sa ar Íosa do céasadh Dia hAoine
    A's do cuireaidh trí n chroidhe an tsleagh dhearg
    Ná cuirfeadh aon mhactíre nó diabhal ins an tslíghe rómhat
