   Care of the feet

   In former times boots were not worn till people were getting married.
   At a later period when going to town or to mass on sunday they went barefoot till they came near the church or town. Then they put on boots. When they were returning they took off the boots as soon as they were gone a short distance on their journey. I have a clear recollection myself of a women who had to cross some fields on her way to mass. She never put on the boots till reaching the public road. On her return journey she took them off again as soon as she crossed into the fields
   As late as ten or 15 years ago the older women still went barefoot when working round the house or on the farm.
   When I was young children never wore boots except going to mass or to a town or during severe weather in winter.
   I knew two persons who never wore a boot at any time. One was called Johnny the Baffity. He was a travelling man, a native of Kerry but he used to come into Co. Cork on his travels. He was a travelling man more from choice than anything else. It seems he belonged to a decent family and had a pension, but being of a moving disposition he took
