   Irish Quarter of garden which was sixty spades. 8 pence per day was the usual wage without PERCUS and when wage rose to 1/- men thought it was a wonderful pay. Five shillings per week for the digging of potatoes and a shilling per day for moving was the average. There was always one man specially selected to lead the others in the work so as to draw them on. This man got perhaps a half glass of whiskey from the farmer and in return dragged on the other men
   There was no plough in those days-all spade work. Many a man, the real spailpín, worked for the week and spent all their earnings often on Saturday night.
   I discovered that I was related to these two brothers (Dennehy) through my maternal grandfather Darby Dennehy- and then we discussed Darby (from whom I take my name although I am fifth son of the family (see page 97 on naming the child). I remember Darby who died suddenly at the age of 98 (in 1912). Darby in his youth was a spailpin and it was said of him that on his journey "down the country" that he on one occasion jumped twenty times forward
