  1. Two old men once resided in Passage West. They were both rivals in a trade very common then, that of a jarvey-car driver. Their horses were old, and the tackling was very much the worse for wear, and mended here and there by pieces of straps and ropes. A great rivalry existed between them, and, as time went on this rivalry became more intense.
    It was a matter of great discussion as to which car was the better. Accordingly, in order to settle the question, the lads of the place proposed to have a race. The race was to be from Passage Cross to Carrigaline. Both drivers were approached and they agreed to the terms.
    On the appointed date the two old men were ready at the starting place, and when the signal was given they started off at a gallop. All went fine until both tried to pass each other out at the former R.I.C. barrack. This was then situated at the top of Lucia Place.
    They were going at a terrific pace now, and when they reached a narrow
