1. Shanid Castle (ar lean)

   are told locally regarding Shanid castle. It is said that the lime mortar used in building it was wet, not by water, but by the blood of cattle, and that the Geraldine army took those cattle in the course of their forages into the territory of the Irish. The cattle were killed to provide food for the soldiers. Even at the present time the mortar between the stones of the castle goes to show that it is of an unusually staunch texture.It defies all attempts to dislodge or (?) it with a pen-knife. Furthermore huge blocks of masonry, some weigh several tons may still be seen strewn about the place. Those were portions of the broken down walls, and the coping stones on some of them would go to show that they fell from the very top of the castle.

   According to another tradition there were two tunnels leading from the castle - one going in a
