- Here and there throughout the country these old forts are situated. Old people say that these forts were houses for old pagan-priests. These forts are closed in with thick bushes, and fir and ash trees. Another name for these forts is a "Lios". A man from around here went torching to Callaghan's "Lios" and he saw a bird, and he begun to hit the bird when the stick fell out of his hand. One day a tinker-man came around here and he said that he came from Avoca, and he said he would never again see that place because it was nearly the cause of his death. He made several verses about it and this is one of them.
Sweet vale of Avoca
Tom Moore called you sweet.
But if he had to travel the,
Country Without boots on his feet.
Or sleep in a bed without blanket or sheet
He would not care to the devil,
Where would the bright waters meet.- Bailitheoir
