   white horse has also a cure for it. The person who has the cough stops the man who is driving, leading, or riding the white horse and asks him "what will cure the whooping cough?" He must then do whatever the man recommends. The eldest child of a woman whose maiden name and marriage name is the same has also a cure for it. The sufferer must go to the child and ask for something - usually bread - and the use of this for a certain number of days ensures a cure (as everybody knows of the custom nobody minds the asking of the bread)
   Ring Worm is prevented from spreading by putting a ring of ink round it. It can be cured by a Protestant woman who lives about a mile from Askeaton. She makes a plaster which she rubs to the worm. The patient must visit her and she applies the plaster. The patient has to pay for the cure as the ingredients used are expensive.
   Burns. There is an old woman living in Church Street, Askeaton, who makes a plaster who can cure burns. The plaster is made from the Interior of cabbage stumps, a plant which she obtains in Ballysteen, and lard. This plaster is spread lightly on a piece of cloth and held before the fire for a few seconds it is then applied to the burn. Its healing qualities are marvellous, and a burn cured by this plaster scarcely ever leaves a mark.
